What Is a Same-Day Sick Visit?
A same-day sick visit is an appointment for a new illness, symptom, minor injury, or sudden change in your child’s health that should be evaluated promptly but does not appear to be a life-threatening emergency.
These appointments allow your child to be evaluated by a pediatric care team familiar with the health needs of infants, children, and teenagers.
Depending on availability, same-day appointments may be offered at our Pineville or Gastonia pediatric office.
Why Pediatric Sick Care Matters
Children cannot always explain exactly what hurts or how they feel. Their symptoms can also change quickly, particularly during infancy and early childhood.
A pediatric sick visit allows a provider to consider your child’s symptoms in the context of their:

What Happens During a Sick Visit?
The details of the appointment depend on your child’s symptoms and medical history. A typical same-day sick visit may include:
Review of Symptoms
Your provider will ask when the symptoms started, how they have changed, and whether your child has experienced fever, pain, changes in appetite, difficulty sleeping, decreased activity, or other concerns.
Pediatric Examination
Your child’s provider performs a focused physical examination based on the symptoms reported. This may include checking the ears, nose, throat, lungs, skin, abdomen, hydration, or an injured area.
Testing When Appropriate
Some illnesses can be diagnosed through the history and physical examination alone. When additional information is needed, your provider may recommend age-appropriate testing based on your child’s symptoms and current testing availability.
Diagnosis and Treatment Guidance
After the evaluation, your provider will explain the likely diagnosis and recommend appropriate care. This may include home care, symptom relief, prescription medication, monitoring, follow-up, or referral for additional evaluation.
Clear Follow-Up Instructions
Before you leave, we want you to understand what to expect, when your child can return to school or childcare, and which changes should prompt another call or more urgent care.

Same-day sick visits may be appropriate for many common childhood illnesses and concerns, including:

- Cold or flu-like symptoms
- Ear pain and possible ear infections

- Headaches

When Should I Call the Pediatrician?
Contact Ages & Stages Pediatric Group when your child has a new symptom that concerns you, symptoms that are getting worse, or an illness that is not improving as expected.
You should also contact a healthcare provider promptly when:
- Your child appears unusually tired, uncomfortable, or unlike themselves
- Fever continues or returns after improving
- Coughing, congestion, pain, vomiting, or diarrhea is worsening
- Your child is drinking less or urinating less frequently
- A rash is spreading, painful, or accompanied by other symptoms
- Asthma or allergy symptoms are not responding to the usual treatment plan
- Your child has an ongoing medical condition that may increase the risk of complications
- You are unsure whether the symptoms can be safely managed at home
An infant younger than 3 months with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher requires prompt medical evaluation. Contact a healthcare professional immediately for instructions.
When to Seek Emergency Care
Same-day office visits are not a substitute for emergency care.
Call 911 or seek emergency medical help if your child:
- Is struggling to breathe
- Has blue, gray, or unusually pale lips or skin
- Is unconscious, extremely difficult to wake, or not responding normally
- Is having a seizure
- Has a severe allergic reaction
- Is choking
- Has uncontrolled bleeding
- Has sustained a serious injury
- Has ingested a poison or dangerous substance
Other serious symptoms—including signs of severe dehydration, confusion, a stiff neck with severe illness, or symptoms that are worsening rapidly.
This list cannot cover every emergency. If you believe your child may be in immediate danger, call 911.
How to Prepare for Your Child’s Sick Visit
Before the appointment, it may be helpful to write down:
- When the symptoms began
- Your child’s highest measured temperature
- How the temperature was taken
- Any medications given and when they were given
- Changes in eating, drinking, urination, or activity
- Recent exposure to illness
- Any recent injuries
- Changes in an existing medical condition
Please bring your child’s current medications and insurance information. If your child has received care or testing elsewhere, bring any available records or results.

How do I request a same-day sick appointment?
Call the Pineville or Gastonia office or submit an appointment request as early as possible. Same-day appointments are offered when scheduling allows, and earlier contact may provide more options.
Do I need to know what is wrong before scheduling?
No. Tell our team about your child’s symptoms, when they began, and what concerns you most. The provider will evaluate your child and determine whether testing or treatment is appropriate.
Can new patients request a sick visit?

Does a fever always require an office visit?
Not every fever requires an appointment. The appropriate response depends on your child’s age, temperature, symptoms, medical history, and overall appearance.
An infant younger than 3 months with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F or higher needs prompt medical evaluation. Parents should also call when a child appears very ill, is having trouble breathing, is not drinking, or has symptoms that are worsening.
Will my child receive antibiotics?
Only when an antibiotic is medically appropriate. Antibiotics treat certain bacterial infections but do not work against viruses. Your child’s provider will recommend treatment based on the examination and any necessary testing.
Can minor injuries be evaluated?
Some minor cuts, falls, sprains, and other injuries may be appropriate for an office visit. Call before arriving so our team can help determine whether your child should be seen in the office, at an urgent care center, or in an emergency department.
Are sick visits available on Saturdays?
Select Saturday appointments are currently offered through the Pineville office. Availability may vary, so please call ahead to confirm the schedule.
What if my child gets worse after the appointment?
Follow the instructions provided during the visit and contact the office if symptoms worsen, new symptoms develop, or your child is not improving as expected. Seek emergency care immediately for serious or life-threatening symptoms.
